Spelling Grades 3–4: Rules, Tricky Words and Study Plan
By third grade, spelling shifts from sounding out simple words to using rules about word parts, endings and word meaning. The same few rules explain hundreds of words, so it is worth teaching them directly.
Rules for adding endings
- Doubling rule: in a one-syllable word with one vowel and one ending consonant, double the final consonant before adding -ing or -ed: hop → hopping, hopped; run → running; stop → stopped.
- Drop the e: if a word ends in silent e, drop it before adding an ending that starts with a vowel: make → making; bake → baked; hope → hoping.
- Change y to i: if a word ends in a consonant plus y, change the y to i before adding -es or -ed: cry → cries, cried; baby → babies; happy → happier. Keep the y for -ing: crying.
- Plurals: add -s to most words, -es after s, x, z, ch, sh (wishes, boxes). Some are irregular: child → children, mouse → mice, foot → feet.
Prefixes and suffixes
| Part | Meaning | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| un- | not | unhappy, unfair, unlock |
| re- | again | redo, rewrite, replay |
| pre- | before | preview, preheat |
| -ful | full of | careful, thankful |
| -less | without | helpless, endless |
| -ly | in a way | slowly, quietly |
Note that adding a prefix does not change the spelling of the base word: un + necessary = unnecessary keeps both n's.
Homophones
Homophones sound the same but have different meanings and spellings. Teach them with memory hooks:
- their / there / they're: their shows ownership; there is a place (it contains "here"); they're = they are.
- to / too / two: too means also or very (it has extra o's); two is the number.
- your / you're: you're = you are.
- hear / here: you hear with your ear.
- write / right, new / knew, ate / eight, sea / see.
Silent letters
Many silent letters are leftovers from older pronunciations: knife, knee, know (silent k), write, wrong, wrap (silent w), lamb, thumb, climb (silent b), gnat, gnome (silent g), island, listen (silent s and t). Say the word with an exaggerated pronunciation to remember the hidden letter: "kuh-nife."

A weekly study plan
- Pre-test on Monday to find which words are already known.
- Study only the missed words: write each one three times, then make a sentence for it.
- Group the words by rule or pattern, and say the rule aloud.
- Practice with a parent quizzing aloud for five minutes on Wednesday and Thursday.
- Friday test, then add missed words to next week's list.
